Here's how it works

A herd share program in Texas involves a contractual arrangement where individuals purchase a share of a herd, typically cows or goats, from a local farmer. This arrangement grants the shareholders access to the raw milk produced by the herd. Here’s how it works:

  1. Share Purchase and Ownership: Members buy a portion of the herd, making them partial owners. This ownership entitles them to a share of the milk produced.
  2. Boarding Fees: Shareholders often pay a recurring fee to cover the animals' care, boarding, and maintenance.
  3. Milk Distribution: In return, members receive a specified amount of raw milk regularly, depending on the productivity of the herd and the number of shares they own.
  4. Legal Aspect: By owning part of the herd, members can legally obtain raw milk, otherwise restricted for direct sale in many areas.
  5. Community and Quality: Herd shares promote local farming, ensuring members get fresh, high-quality milk while supporting sustainable agricultural practices.

Share Cost & Boarding Fees

Share fee (one-time membership fee)

A one-time share fee of $10.00 per share will give you (the Shareholder) access to a share in our milk and other select farm goods like butter, so long as you pay the weekly boarding fees billed monthly.

Each share entitles you to one gallon of our raw A2/A2 whole milk each week, so long as it's reasonably available and boarding fees are paid before pickup date.

* Your share of ownership will end when boarding fees are no longer paid or either party gives a 30-day notice.

Boarding Fees

After the desired number of shares are purchased, Shareholder will be responsible for weekly boarding fees to assist in the maintenance, upkeep, and production costs of "our" herd.

Boarding fees are $50 per month per share.  One share give 1.

For Example: If you want 1 gallon of milk each week, you would pay $10.00 to purchase one share.

After that you would pay $50.00 a month per share (Payment due the 1st of each month).

Boarding fees must be paid even in the event:

  • That you cannot pick up your milk for any reason*
  • The Provider needs to withdraw milk for testing or treating the cow**
  • The cow is in a lesser production phase (usually due to calf sharing the months following or proceeding with calving)**
  • The cow is in her dry phase (approximately 2 months) prior to calving***

* If the Shareholder can't pick up their milk share during the agreed upon time and day, the Provider will decide to whom and where to donate their share, unless Shareholder makes prior agreements with Provider.  Boarding fees must still be paid without compensation.

**Provider is committed to caring for the herd, including feeding, milking, and delivering quality fresh milk and other dairy goods.  Provider will do their best to ensure the above events are as least disruptive as they can be. For instance, the Provider will try to have more than one cow in milk at all times so as to accommodate for any milk production loss.

***During the two-three month dry phase, if you still pay boarding fees without receiving milk, keep in mind this is a chance for the provider to take a break from 24/7 milking obligations.  It won't necessarily always mean the full two to three months of no milk depending on whether other cows are in milk. This time will fairly allow the Provider to spend time with their family or take a vacation, while still maintaining the needs of the herd. Otherwise share membership will end and you will have to pay the $10 membership fee and sign new contract once milk resumes.  Spots are not guaranteed.
